The Longest Day
On Monday 21 June 2016, award winning portrait photographer Tom Oldham, decided to document his corner of East London. 24 portraits over 24 hours, one an hour – an air-ambulance pilot, a butcher at a 3am market, tube workers, shopowners, a baker of children’s cakes, publicans. The project evolved spontaneously over the day to become this beautiful tapestry of East London life…
“We retouched on Tuesday, designed a newspaper on Wednesday and had 5,000 copies printed on Thursday. Then we woke up on Friday to Brexit. The reaction was astonishingly positive. People looked through the Longest Day and saw a portrait of their own multicultural neighbourhood that put community above race. On a day that suggested ‘We want you out’, readers recognised ‘We want us together’”. – Tom Oldham
